Geely Coolray Challenges Japanese Dominance in Indonesia’s Low-SUV Market with Bold Petrol Launch

Jakarta – Geely’s decision to introduce a petrol-powered vehicle into Indonesia’s fiercely competitive low-SUV segment, an arena overwhelmingly dominated by Japanese manufacturers, has sparked significant industry discussion. This bold move marks the first non-electric model from the Chinese automaker to be launched in the Indonesian market, raising questions about its strategic rationale and potential to carve out a niche against established giants.

The vehicle in question is the Geely Coolray, a B-segment SUV that Geely Auto Indonesia believes possesses the attributes to appeal to Indonesian consumers despite the entrenched presence of brands like Toyota, Daihatsu, and Suzuki. Constantinus Herlijoso, Sales and Channel Development Director for Geely Auto Indonesia, acknowledged the formidable market share held by Japanese automakers in this segment. However, he expressed confidence that there remains "a slice of the pie" that Geely can successfully secure.

"The Coolray is a B-Segment SUV, which currently represents the largest market share," Constantinus explained during an interview in Mandalika, Lombok. "We understand that in Indonesia, B-Segment SUVs have their own distinct market because they tend to offer higher ground clearance, a more elevated sitting position, and a commanding driving feel. These are characteristics that resonate with Indonesian buyers."

Herlijoso further elaborated on Geely’s positioning, stating, "We are relatively new compared to Japanese or Korean brands. Geely is catching up and possesses advanced technology. We recognize that the development of Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) is still extensive and evolving. One example of Geely’s innovation is their methanol engine technology, which can be combined with other systems." This statement hints at Geely’s commitment to exploring diverse powertrain solutions beyond purely electric vehicles, even as the global automotive industry shifts towards electrification.

When pressed about the specific sales targets Geely aims to achieve with the Coolray in the petrol-powered segment, Herlijoso adopted a measured approach, indicating that the company is not overly fixated on aggressive sales figures. "Frankly, we are not overly ambitious with the numbers we want the Coolray to achieve," he admitted. "Our primary goal is market penetration and reintroducing Geely’s technological capabilities to the Indonesian public. Geely was developed from its inception as an automotive company, and we want to showcase that heritage and innovation."

Strategic Positioning and Market Entry

The Geely Coolray is slated to be positioned as an urban vehicle within the B-segment. Industry observers anticipate its pricing to hover around the Rp 200 million mark, a competitive price point within this segment. The official launch is scheduled to take place at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2026, a premier automotive exhibition in the region. This strategic timing allows Geely to leverage the significant consumer attention and media coverage typically generated by such large-scale automotive events.

The Indonesian automotive market, particularly the SUV segment, has seen consistent growth over the past decade. According to data from the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo), the SUV category has been a significant contributor to overall vehicle sales. In 2023, for instance, the SUV segment accounted for a substantial portion of total passenger vehicle sales, driven by consumer demand for vehicles offering versatility, comfort, and a higher driving position suitable for diverse road conditions, including those often encountered in urban and peri-urban environments. The B-segment, in particular, has emerged as a sweet spot for many manufacturers, balancing affordability with features that appeal to a broad demographic, including young professionals and families.

The overwhelming dominance of Japanese brands in this segment is not a recent phenomenon. For decades, Toyota (with models like the Rush and Raize), Daihatsu (Terios and Rocky), and Suzuki (Jimny and XL7) have built strong brand loyalty and extensive dealer networks across Indonesia. Their vehicles are renowned for their reliability, fuel efficiency, and readily available spare parts, factors that are highly valued by Indonesian consumers. Geely’s entry, therefore, represents a significant challenge to this established order, requiring a compelling product offering and a robust after-sales service strategy to gain traction.

Geely Coolray: A Deep Dive into Specifications and Features

The Geely Coolray, as presented for the Indonesian market, is the flagship variant, boasting a sporty and aggressive design. Its exterior features a distinctive racing aesthetic, highlighted by a striking color combination, a prominent spoiler emblazoned with the letter ‘S’, and vibrant red brake calipers. This visual flair is clearly aimed at attracting a younger, more style-conscious demographic.

In terms of dimensions, the Coolray is a compact SUV, measuring 4,380 mm in length, 1,795 mm in width, and 1,608 mm in height. Its wheelbase stands at 2,600 mm, contributing to its agile handling and maneuverability, characteristics that are advantageous for urban driving. The interior design further amplifies the sporty theme, with semi-bucket seats designed to provide enhanced support and a more engaging driving experience.

Under the hood, the Coolray is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, delivering an impressive 174 PS (horsepower) and 290 Nm of torque. This output places it competitively within its segment, offering a strong performance proposition. Power is sent to the front wheels through a 7-speed automatic transmission, promising smooth gear shifts and efficient power delivery. Geely claims a top speed of up to 200 km/h for the Coolray, indicating its capability for confident highway cruising.

The vehicle is equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced safety features, including the Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS). This suite encompasses features such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, lane keeping assist, intelligent high beam control, traffic sign recognition, speed limit assist, traffic jam assist, and integrated cruise assist. The inclusion of such advanced safety technologies is a significant selling point, aligning with the growing consumer demand for vehicles that offer enhanced safety and driver support.

In terms of infotainment and convenience, the Coolray doesn’t disappoint. It features a smart keyless entry system, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, and a large 14.6-inch central touchscreen display. Compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ensures seamless integration of smartphones, while wireless charging adds to the overall convenience. These modern amenities are crucial for appealing to today’s tech-savvy consumers.

Geely’s Broader Ambitions and the Future of ICE

Geely’s strategic decision to launch a petrol-powered SUV in Indonesia comes at a time when many global automakers are accelerating their transition towards electric vehicles (EVs). However, the Indonesian market, while showing increasing interest in EVs, still has a strong preference for traditional internal combustion engine vehicles due to factors such as charging infrastructure availability, range anxiety, and the established familiarity with petrol-powered cars.

The company’s mention of methanol engine technology also suggests a forward-looking approach to ICE development. Methanol, which can be produced from renewable sources, is being explored by some manufacturers as a potentially cleaner alternative fuel for internal combustion engines. This could position Geely as an innovator in alternative fuels within the ICE space, even as the industry pivots towards full electrification.

The long-term implications of Geely’s entry into the Indonesian low-SUV market will depend on several factors. Firstly, the brand’s ability to build trust and establish a strong reputation for reliability and after-sales service will be paramount. A robust dealer network, readily available spare parts, and competitive servicing costs are critical for sustained success in Indonesia.

Secondly, the pricing strategy will play a crucial role. While the anticipated Rp 200 million range is competitive, Geely will need to ensure that the Coolray offers compelling value for money compared to its Japanese rivals, which often benefit from established brand loyalty and economies of scale.

Finally, Geely’s commitment to understanding and adapting to the specific needs and preferences of Indonesian consumers will be key. This includes not only product features and performance but also marketing strategies and customer engagement.

The Indonesian automotive landscape is dynamic, with evolving consumer preferences and technological advancements. Geely’s launch of the Coolray represents a significant strategic play to capture a share of a lucrative market segment. While the path ahead is undoubtedly challenging, the company’s confidence in its product and technology suggests a long-term vision for its presence in Indonesia. The success of the Geely Coolray will serve as a crucial indicator of the potential for new entrants to disrupt the established order in one of Southeast Asia’s most important automotive markets. The automotive industry will be watching closely to see if Geely can indeed carve out its "slice of the pie" and redefine competition in Indonesia’s popular low-SUV segment.
